Bridging the gap between histories of medicine and political/institutional histories of the early modern crown, this book explores the relationship between one of the most highly bureaucratic regimes in early modern Europe, Spain, and crown interest in and regulation of medical practices. Complementing recent histories that have emphasized the interdependent nature of governance between the crown and municipalities in sixteenth-century Spain, this study argues that medical policies were the result of negotiation and cooperation among the crown, the towns, and medical practitioners. During the reign of Philip II (1556-1598), the crown provided unique opportunities for advancements in the medical field among practitioners and support for the creation and dissemination of innovative medical techniques. In addition, crown support for and regulation of medicine served as an important bureaucratic tool in the crown's effort to expand and solidify its authority over the distinct kingdoms and territories under Castilian authority and the municipalities within the kingdom of Castile itself. The crown was not the only agent of change in the medical world, however. Medical policies and their successful implementation required consensus and cooperation among competing political authorities. Bringing to life a cast of characters from early modern Spain, from the female empiric who practiced bonesetting and surgery to the university-trained, Latin physician whose medical textbook standardized medical education in the universities, the book will broaden the scope of medical history to include not only the development of medical theory and innovative practice, but also address the complex tensions between various authorities which influenced the development and nature of medical practice and perceptions of 'public health' in early modern Europe. Juxtaposing the history of medicine with the history of early modern state-building brings a unique perspective to this challenging book that reassesses the relationship between the monarch and intellectual milieu of medicine in Spain. It further challenges the dominance of studies of medical regulation from France and England and illuminates a diverse and innovative world of Spanish medical practice that has been neglected in standard histories of early modern medicine.

System Health Management: with Aerospace Applications provides the first complete reference text for System Health Management (SHM), the set of technologies and processes used to improve system dependability. Edited by a team of engineers and consultants with SHM design, development, and research experience from NASA, industry, and academia, each heading up sections in their own areas of expertise and co-coordinating contributions from leading experts, the book collates together in one text the state-of-the-art in SHM research, technology, and applications. It has been written primarily as a reference text for practitioners, for those in related disciplines, and for graduate students in aerospace or systems engineering.

There are many technologies involved in SHM and no single person can be an expert in all aspects of the discipline.System Health Management: with Aerospace Applications provides an introduction to the major technologies, issues, and references in these disparate but related SHM areas. Since SHM has evolved most rapidly in aerospace, the various applications described in this book are taken primarily from the aerospace industry. However, the theories, techniques, and technologies discussed are applicable to many engineering disciplines and application areas.

Readers will find sections on the basic theories and concepts of SHM, how it is applied in the system life cycle (architecture, design, verification and validation, etc.), the most important methods used (reliability, quality assurance, diagnostics, prognostics, etc.), and how SHM is applied in operations (commercial aircraft, launch operations, logistics, etc.), to subsystems (electrical power, structures, flight controls, etc.) and to system applications (robotic spacecraft, tactical missiles, rotorcraft, etc.).

The Philips Life Line Medical Alarm Bracelet

!±8± The Philips Life Line Medical Alarm Bracelet

Studies have shown that the two most common threats to independent living of seniors are falls and mistakes in taking medication. This is why Philips has introduced its own line of medical alarm bracelet. In addition, they offer a Medication Dispensing Service as well. Both of these products can help to provide peace of mind so you or a loved on will be able to live an independent life in retirement. Because there are a wide variety of companies out there offering this type of device, Philips acknowledges that when making your decision about which to purchase that dependability will be high on your list.

Philips currently offers two different types of medical alarm bracelet: the standard model and a new option that features an auto alert option. There standard model allows you to call for help at the push of a button so even if you cannot get to a phone you will be able to alert others to your situation. It is estimated that each year 13.5 million people ages 65 and older will experience a bad fall. This is why it is so important to be able to call for help 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. You have the choice of either a pendant or bracelet and each is comfortable and small. They are designed to look like a simple timepiece.

The version of this medical alarms bracelet which offers the auto alert function can even further help to keep you safe as it will go off without your even having to push the button. This way if you are knocked unconscious help will be on the way. Sometimes it is tempting to simply carry a cell phone around with you in case of an accident. However, there are several reasons why this is an inferior solution. A emergency transmitter is usually waterproof so it can be worn anywhere. In addition, because it features only a single button it can be used even when you are disoriented. The auto alert function even makes it possible to receive help without your having to do anything.

The Life Line offers a simple three step process by which you can receive help in case of an accident. First of all, you simply have to push the button on your. If the auto alert version is chosen it will simply detect that you have fallen and immediately call for help. At this point you will hear the calm, reassuring voice of a Life Line response team member who will try to keep you calm and will assess the best way to handle the situation. Depending on your needs, a friend or family member will be called, or an ambulance will be sent to your home. There will be a follow up to make sure help has arrived.
